MTCC Secures Infrastructure Contracts for Harbour and Shore Protection Across Five Islands

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has secured contracts to implement critical infrastructure projects across five islands, aimed at enhancing maritime accessibility and coastal resilience. The agreements were formally signed on September 2 at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development. Representing the ministry, State Minister Ismail Hameed signed the agreements, while MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed signed on behalf of the company. The projects focus on a combination of harbour development, shore protection, and land reclamation, addressing the urgent need for sustainable coastal management in the archipelago. The scope of the newly awarded contracts includes the second phase of land reclamation and shore protection in Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, and the second phase of similar works in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll. Additionally, MTCC will lead the design and construction of a new harbour in Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, as well as the installation of shore protection structures in Dharanboodhoo, Faafu Atoll. The company is also tasked with essential harbour repairs in Gaafaru, Kaafu Atoll. These developments follow a series of similar awards granted on September 1, further expanding MTCC's current project portfolio. Those earlier agreements include shore protection works in Kihaadhoo, Baa Atoll and Muraidhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, as well as harbour maintenance dredging and jetty construction in Bandidhoo, Dhaalu Atoll. Furthermore, MTCC will undertake harbour upgrades and land reclamation specifically for fisheries infrastructure in Kelaa, Haa Alifu Atoll. By integrating harbour upgrades with land reclamation and shore protection, these projects aim to safeguard island communities from erosion while boosting local economies through improved transport and fishing facilities. These initiatives reflect the government's broader strategy to modernize regional infrastructure and ensure long-term climate resilience for the Maldives' dispersed island populations.
