MTCC to Build $10 Million Quay Wall for New Thilafushi Port

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has awarded a $10 million contract to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to develop critical infrastructure at the new Thilafushi Port. The project involves the construction of a 100-metre quay wall and 6,775 square metres of paving and related infrastructure. The agreement was formalized in a signing ceremony between MPL Chief Executive Officer Captain Hussain Shafeeq and MTCC Managing Director DCP (Retd) Ahmed Saudi. The quay wall component alone is valued at $1.17 million, with the total development cost reaching $10 million. Work is expected to be completed within 120 days. In the immediate term, the new area will be utilized for cargo clearance operations. This move is designed to alleviate congestion and operational challenges currently faced at the Male’ Commercial Harbour and the Hulhumale’ International Terminal by relocating a significant portion of sea cargo clearance to Thilafushi. Once the broader Thilafushi Port Development Project is fully completed, this specific section will transition into a dedicated service quay for MPL vessels. This infrastructure is a pivotal part of the government's larger strategy to modernize maritime logistics and expand port capacity. MPL reports that overall development of the international port is progressing rapidly, with a target opening date set for November 2027. Once operational, the facility will see a full transfer of operations from the Male’ Commercial Harbour, significantly reducing the urban footprint of cargo handling in the capital. This latest contract follows the appointment of the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) earlier this year, which was tasked with the design and survey works for Phase I of the project. MPL has confirmed that the design phase is now nearing completion.
