MTCC to Build $2.42 Million Elderly Community Centre in Funadhoo

World ·
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded a USD 2.42 million contract to construct a dedicated elderly community centre on Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll. The agreement was formalized at the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare in a ceremony attended by State Minister Ibrahim Ismail Ali and MTCC Deputy Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen. The new two-storey facility is designed to accommodate up to 40 residents, providing a critical sanctuary for the island's senior citizens. Beyond residential housing, the complex will feature integrated healthcare service areas, administrative offices, and dedicated recreational spaces, ensuring that elderly residents have access to essential medical care and social engagement within their own community. For the 4,186 residents of Funadhoo, the centre represents a significant shift in social infrastructure. By allowing senior citizens to receive professional care without leaving their home island, the government aims to improve overall wellbeing and foster stronger familial and social bonds. This initiative aligns with a broader national policy spearheaded by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, which prioritizes the safety, welfare, and societal integration of the elderly. The Funadhoo project is part of a wider strategic rollout to establish similar centres across the Maldives. In addition to the Greater Male' Region, the government plans to develop senior citizens’ centres in Laamu, Dhaalu, Raa, and Shaviyani Atolls within the current year. To ensure sustainable local management, these facilities will be operated by the respective island councils, with the Ministry of Health providing the necessary technical support and programmatic guidance. The Funadhoo facility is scheduled for completion within 360 days.
