MTCC to Develop Harbors, Protect Shores in Utheemu and Maduvvari

Politics ·
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has secured contracts for critical harbor and coastal protection projects in the islands of Utheemu and Maduvvari. The agreements, signed by State Minister of Construction Hassan Rasheed and MTCC Deputy Managing Director Ahmed Shareef Abdul Rahman Yoosuf, aim to bolster maritime infrastructure and shield the islands from coastal erosion. In Maduvvari, Meemu Atoll, the project includes extensive sand backfilling, harbor maintenance, and dredging. To fortify the coastline, the plan calls for constructing 184 meters of breakwater, 25 meters of revetment, and installing 308 meters of groynes. The project will also add 77 mooring rings, 11 harbor lights, concrete paving, and a pump drainage system. The work is slated for completion within 360 days. For Utheemu in Haa Alif Atoll, the project involves dredging both existing and new harbor basins to improve depth and navigability. It encompasses land reclamation and the installation of groynes, mooring rings, lighting, and paving. Shore protection efforts will focus on geotube revetments, groyne maintenance, and the construction of a ramp, breakwater, and channel breakwater. This larger undertaking has a 510-day completion timeline. These projects represent a significant investment in the outer atolls, addressing vital needs for safe anchorage for local vessels and proactive measures against the persistent threat of coastal erosion, which impacts island communities across the Maldives.
