The government has awarded the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) two major contracts worth a combined $15.8 million for large-scale infrastructure development on Hoarafushi in Haa Alifu Atoll.
The larger contract, valued at $12.94 million, focuses on expanding the island's land area and protecting its coastline. MTCC will reclaim 25.07 hectares of new land to address long-standing space constraints on the island. To protect this new land, the project includes constructing a 580-meter revetment, 270 meters of groynes, and a 1,496-meter bioswale drainage system. The company has 330 days to complete this work.
A second, separate contract worth $2.86 million covers the third phase of Hoarafushi's road development network. MTCC, which is already handling the first and second phases of road construction on the island, has 360 days to deliver this next stage.
The agreements were signed by Mohamed Shamil, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, and Hassan Naufal Nasir, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of MTCC. The signing ceremony was attended by Hoarafushi's Member of Parliament, Ali Moosa, underscoring the project's high priority for the atoll.
These projects represent a significant investment in Hoarafushi's physical development, aiming to create more usable land, protect against coastal erosion, and improve internal connectivity through an expanded road network.
