President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives is seeking investment not merely for capital, but to create new jobs and industries. He made these remarks at the opening ceremony of the China-Maldives Investment Corporation Forum, held as part of "Maldives Expo 2026". "We need investment not merely for the capital we receive. We seek the industries it generates, skills, the jobs it creates, and the opportunities it provides for our citizens," Muizzu said. He noted that the government has introduced a new foreign investment law by amending the 40-year-old law to gain investors' trust and confidence, adding that the government will take full responsibility for ensuring the success of investments. The President highlighted areas open for investment in the country, including clean energy, processing fishery products to modern standards, digital technology, and sustainable infrastructure development. He also invited investors to help achieve the goal of "Vision 2040", which aims to transform the Maldives into a fully developed nation by 2040. "I invite every investor and businessman to engage with the Maldives with renewed trust. Let them bring their experience, ideas, and innovations, and become part of our journey towards 'Vision 2040'," Muizzu said. Highlighting business ties between the two countries, Muizzu stated that China imported goods worth $440 million from January of last year to the end of August this year, with more than one-quarter of these goods, amounting to $124 million, imported under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between the two countries. The forum was attended by representatives from the governments of the Maldives and China, as well as senior officials from companies and investors from both countries. The expo, held at Hulhumale Central Park, features 15 Chinese companies showcasing their products and services.
