Multi-Agency Task Force Clears 308 Sites to Curb Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Health ·
A multi-agency task force has completed a sweeping five-day operation across the greater Male’ region, inspecting hundreds of premises to destroy potential mosquito breeding grounds and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks. Running from April 19 to 23, the coordinated effort targeted 308 locations, including active construction sites, residential buildings, and vacant properties. The operation focused on high-risk areas across the capital's urban hubs, covering 153 sites in Male’, 83 in Hulhumale’, 59 in Villimale’, 12 in Thilafushi, and one in Gulhifalhu. The initiative was led by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in collaboration with the Male’ City Council, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Maldivian Red Crescent, and hospitals in Hulhumale’ and Villimale’. According to the HPA, teams identified and eliminated numerous sites conducive to mosquito breeding. The most frequent culprits were water storage barrels and tanks, as well as discarded tires, plastic bottles, and construction materials left outdoors, which collect rainwater and create ideal hatching environments. This large-scale inspection is part of a proactive strategy to lower the incidence of mosquito-borne illnesses by removing hazardous environmental factors before they lead to public health crises. The participating institutions have affirmed that this is not a one-time event, pledging to continue collaborative inspections to ensure a safer living environment for residents. Following the operation, the HPA issued an urgent appeal to both residents and business owners to remain vigilant. Authorities are urging the public to take personal responsibility by eliminating stagnant water and maintaining clean surroundings to destroy potential breeding sites on their own properties.
