MWSC launches feasibility study for subsea water production system near Malé

Technology ·
The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has commenced a feasibility study for establishing a subsea water production system in the Malé region. This is the first project of its kind in the Maldives. The study, currently underway, aims to assess whether the technology can be successfully implemented in the country. As part of the feasibility assessment, the technical team of Norwegian company Flocean collected water samples from 500 metres depth. Initial analysis indicates that the water taken from the depth is exceptionally clean, and laboratory tests suggest it is among the highest quality natural water sources suitable for production. Flocean's innovative technology utilises the natural hydrostatic pressure of the ocean to drive a reverse osmosis process, reportedly reducing electricity consumption by 40% to 50% and significantly minimising chemical usage and environmental impact. Based on the study results, MWSC will evaluate the technical and commercial viability of the project. If successful, the project would provide the Maldives with a productive, sustainable and environmentally friendly water infrastructure, supporting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's vision of a developed Maldives by 2040. The most suitable area identified so far for the plant is the outer sea off Girivarufalhu.
