Naifaru Land Reclamation Completes as Island Transforms Into Regional Urban Hub

The land reclamation project in Naifaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, has reached completion, marking a significant step in the government's strategy to develop the island into a major urban center. The project, executed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has added 45 hectares of new land to the island. Work on the reclamation began in October last year during a visit by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. While the land filling is complete, coastal protection efforts are currently 24 percent finished. To secure the new territory against erosion, MTCC is constructing 1,813 meters of rock revetment, an 803-meter offshore rock breakwater, and 474 meters of rock groynes. With a population exceeding 5,800 residents, Naifaru has struggled with acute land shortages for decades. The current expansion is designed to alleviate housing pressure and stimulate economic growth by providing space for new social infrastructure and commercial opportunities. This follows a previous effort in 2004, where 16 hectares were reclaimed primarily for residential use. The government's vision for Naifaru extends beyond this single phase. At the time the current 45-hectare project was awarded, work was already underway to reclaim an additional 21 hectares. Further expansions are planned to ensure the island can sustain its role as a regional-level urban hub, providing essential services to the surrounding atolls. Currently spanning a total land area of 55 hectares, Naifaru is being positioned as a key economic pillar in Lhaviyani Atoll. The transition from a congested island to a planned urban center aims to improve the quality of life for residents while diversifying the local economy through increased land availability for development.
