Nasheed Pledges Full Support to Unite MDP Ahead of Key Elections
Politics ·
Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has offered his full cooperation in maintaining unity within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which is currently grappling with internal divisions. Nasheed, who led the MDP for years before briefly leaving in 2023 and rejoining recently, emphasized his commitment to the party’s cohesion and success in upcoming elections. The announcement comes as senior MDP figures vie for the party’s 2028 presidential ticket. Nasheed congratulated Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, who was unanimously elected as the party’s interim chairperson, and assured him of his support in achieving victory in the Local Council Elections. The MDP has been divided into factions, particularly after Nasheed’s departure in 2023 and his subsequent formation of the Democrats party, which was later dissolved. Nasheed’s return to the MDP has intensified the competition for the presidential ticket, with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and other senior leaders also positioning themselves for the role.
