Nasheed Proposes Converting Hanimaadhoo Airport into Regional Airline Hub

Politics ·
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has suggested transforming Hanimaadhoo International Airport into a hub for a regional airline. This proposal comes amid discussions about the airport's operations following its recent redevelopment with India's assistance. Nasheed emphasized that such a move could drive development in the northern atolls and generate greater profits for Maldivians. The suggestion follows reports that India’s Airports Authority of India (AAI) is studying a proposal for Indian companies to manage the airport, which the Maldivian government has denied. Hanimaadhoo International Airport, upgraded at a cost of USD 136.6 million, now features a 2,465-meter runway and facilities capable of handling 1.3 million passengers annually.
