Nasheed Urges Government to Exit Fish Business Amid Fishermen's Protest Over Unmet Promises
Politics ·
Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has called on the government to withdraw from the fish buying business and allow foreigners to obtain fish purchase licenses, stating it would help fishermen secure fair prices. Nasheed made these remarks in a post on X marking Fishermen’s Day, highlighting several conditions he believes are necessary for fishermen to receive fair compensation for their catch. These include reducing raw fish exports, investing in cold storage capacity, and cutting operational costs. Nasheed’s comments come as fishermen continue to protest near the Presidential Jetty, accusing the government of failing to fulfill key pledges from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto. The Boat and Crew Members Union (BKMU) cited delays in starting yellowfin tuna purchases through MIFCO, setting a floor price for yellowfin tuna, and improving access to fuel and ice as reasons for the protest. Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam acknowledged the delay in payments as a major concern and mentioned that construction of a fish processing facility in Hulhumale' will begin next month as part of the government’s commitment to supporting the industry.
