Nasheed Warns of Rising Hardline Ideology Within MDP

Politics ·
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern over what he describes as an increasing hardline sectarian ideology within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). In a post on X, Nasheed, who serves as the party's chairman, stated that the MDP, once recognized for championing open politics and peaceful coexistence with diverse ideologies, is now engaging in actions that foster animosity towards outsiders and promote a hardline mindset. He warned that some individuals believe manipulating people’s sentiments and creating division is a way to win elections, and cautioned that such short-term political gains would weaken the party. Nasheed also criticized the promotion of non-existent narratives, such as using religion as a political weapon or claiming that Zionists are ruling the country, saying such tactics will not enhance the party’s credibility. He called on members to uphold the party’s core principles and prevent harmful ideologies from taking root.
