National Drug Agency Partners with Yunnan University to Integrate AI in Mental Health
World ·
The National Drug Agency (NDA) has signed a strategic agreement with China’s Yunnan University to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and data science into the Maldives' mental health and substance abuse treatment services.
The collaboration, signed by NDA Chairperson Ahmed Siddeeq, aims to modernize existing treatment programs. By leveraging AI-based solutions, the two institutions will focus on joint research, technical assistance, and specialized training to enhance the capabilities of NDA staff. Most of the project's operational work will be headquartered at the National Drug Agency.
Deputy Director General Abdullah Faseeh highlighted that the primary goal is to reduce the time-consuming nature of psychological assessments. Currently, patients often face delays before treatment begins while waiting for assessment results. The introduction of AI-powered tools is expected to streamline this process, allowing treatment to commence more rapidly.
Beyond efficiency, the partnership seeks to address the challenge of providing 24/7 mental health support. According to Faseeh, the technology will enable the NDA to deliver critical services at any time and from any location, breaking the constraints of traditional clinical hours.
The technical execution will be led by Yunnan University’s School of Software and Artificial Intelligence. While the university has already developed a highly effective AI application for mental health, it was originally designed for the Chinese environment. A key priority of the initial phase will be adapting this software to suit the specific cultural and social context of the Maldives.
To ensure the project adheres to national standards, the NDA will coordinate with the Attorney General’s Office to address all necessary legal requirements. The initiative also includes a comprehensive training program for NDA personnel to ensure they are equipped to manage and operate the new AI systems.
The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of State for Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan, alongside senior officials from the NDA and a delegation from Yunnan University.
