Nationwide 'Hashiheyo Raajje' Health Initiative Launches to Transform Maldivian Wellness

World ·
The nationwide 'Hashiheyo Raajje' fitness and wellness programme officially launched in Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, beginning with a high-energy water aerobics session on the island's beach. The initiative, established under a directive from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, aims to foster a healthier population by rolling out wellness activities across every inhabited island in the Maldives. Managed by the Department of Fitness and Recreation under the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness, the programme relies on a network of island-based sports counselors for local implementation. Deputy Minister Ahmed Ashfan told PSM News that building local capacity is the cornerstone of the project's sustainability. He announced that the government aims to have fully trained sports counselors stationed in every region of the country by November this year. According to Deputy Minister Ashfan, public reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with a notable increase in participation among women and senior citizens, particularly in water sports. He noted that the initiative not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but also strengthens community bonds through collective physical activity. The Villingili event, held from August 28 to 29, featured sessions led by veteran fitness instructor Ismail Ahmed. Participants were taught foundational exercise techniques for both land and water, focusing on how to utilize natural local resources for daily fitness routines. Beyond physical exercise, 'Hashiheyo Raajje' adopts a holistic approach to wellbeing. Healthcare professionals from the Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital provided nutrition workshops on weight management and balanced diets. Additionally, the organization Advocates for the Rights of Children (ARC) conducted sessions on sports awareness and child safeguarding. The launch was attended by Ministry officials and members of the Villingili Island Council. A total of 40 participants, including regional sports counselors from Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls, joined the two-day workshop. This event is intended to serve as a blueprint for community-driven health initiatives across the archipelago.
