New $778,000 Holy Quran Outreach Centre Opens in Fuvahmulah City
World ·
The Maldivian government has officially inaugurated the outreach centre of the National Centre for the Holy Quran in Fuvahmulah City, marking a significant step in expanding religious education across the archipelago.
State Minister at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Abdulla Saudhan, inaugurated the facility during a ceremony attended by Fuvahmulah City Council members, local institutional heads, and community residents. The project was developed at a cost exceeding USD 778,000.
The new facility is designed to be a comprehensive hub for Quranic studies. The ground floor features an auditorium, a library, and a meeting room, while the upper floor houses four classrooms, a Hifz assessment room, and a prayer area capable of accommodating 30 worshippers at a time.
Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, announced via X that the government intends to expand Quran memorisation classes in Fuvahmulah by recruiting additional teachers. This move aligns with a broader national strategy to increase the number of Hafiz and strengthen religious affairs throughout the Maldives.
Looking toward the future, Minister Shaheem revealed that the design concept for a dedicated Islamic Centre in Fuvahmulah City has been finalised and submitted to the City Council for feedback. Once this permanent centre is constructed, it will house the National Centre for the Holy Quran's city operations. At that point, the current outreach centre will be converted into a Waqf property, with its rental income dedicated to supporting local religious development.
This initiative is part of a larger administration goal to establish a branch of the National Centre for the Holy Quran on every inhabited island. By decentralizing access to Quranic education, the government aims to preserve religious knowledge and promote Islamic values for future generations across all atolls.
