New AI Hub Launched to Drive National Digitalization and Public Service Reform

The Maldives has officially launched the National AI and Data Competency Centre, known as the Maldives AI Lab, marking a strategic leap toward the government's 'Maldives 2.0' vision for national digitalization. The facility is designed to elevate state capacity, transforming the Maldives from a consumer of foreign technology into a producer of digital services tailored to national interests. During the inauguration, Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, emphasized that the lab is not merely a center for technology products but a hub to refine institutional decision-making and enhance public services. He revealed that the government is currently drafting legislation to establish a secure and robust digital infrastructure to support these advancements. Central to the government's strategy is a symbiotic partnership with the private sector. Minister Ihusaan stated that while the state will provide the necessary governance frameworks and public accountability, the private industry will contribute the essential engineering capacity and operational speed. The center's primary mandate is to systematically introduce AI solutions across government agencies and cultivate a pool of local specialists, reducing the nation's dependence on foreign expertise. Adding to the digital push, the ceremony included the launch of 'Co.Lab 26,' a joint venture between MINDCo and the Bank of Maldives. Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of the Bank of Maldives, highlighted how technology has already revolutionized financial inclusion in the archipelago. He noted that digital banking has eliminated the need for residents across 1,200 islands to undertake arduous journeys for basic banking services, bringing financial access directly to the citizen. The Maldives AI Lab will serve as a space for experimentation and learning. To encourage practical innovation, the center will host events such as the 'Co.Lab 26 Hackathon,' inviting industry experts and local talent to develop scalable solutions for the country's most pressing national challenges.
