President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said a new chapter has opened in relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, with closer cooperation expected to bring significant benefits to the people of both countries. The President made the remarks in a statement after official talks held during his ongoing official visit to Pakistan. He thanked the Pakistani government and people for their warm hospitality.
Describing the 60-year relationship between the two countries as one built on religious and brotherly friendship, President Muizzu said the visit would carry ties to new heights. He noted that agreements had been exchanged in 20 important areas and that realising those agreements for the benefit of the people would now be a shared goal. The President also highlighted opportunities to deepen ties, including the start of direct flights between the Maldives and Pakistan, which he said would boost trade and economic links and benefit halal tourism in the Maldives.
During his meeting with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the President said discussions covered opportunities for young people, including training in artificial intelligence, digital and technology fields. In the health sector, talks addressed widening opportunities for Maldivian students and health professionals, including more MBBS opportunities under the Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme and internships for Maldivian doctors in Pakistan. The President also welcomed Pakistan's support on climate resilience and environmental protection, and praised Pakistan's diplomatic efforts and humanitarian assistance in the Middle East.
