New Coast Guard Center Boosts Maldives' Maritime Rescue and Emergency Response

The Maldives Coast Guard has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC), significantly upgrading the nation's capacity to manage maritime emergencies and search-and-rescue operations. Speaking at the inauguration, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy emphasized that the Maldives' vast oceanic territory makes rapid response critical. He warned that any delay in responding to sea accidents can lead to the immediate loss of life and property, underscoring the necessity of a robust maritime security infrastructure. The modernized facility features a high-tech operational control room, dedicated training classrooms, and an auditorium specifically designed for law enforcement education and search-and-rescue drills. The center's completion ensures that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) can more effectively fulfill its legal mandate to assist vessels in distress and rescue stranded persons. Construction of the MRCC was revived this year following previous delays. Major General Hilmy credited President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for prioritizing the project's resumption to enhance the country's emergency capacities. The project was made possible through financial funding from the Government of Japan and technical expertise provided by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). “With modern facilities, we will be able to provide assistance to vessels in distress at sea and rescue people,” Major General Hilmy stated, noting that the completion of the center fulfills a long-standing military objective to safeguard the Maldives' territorial waters.
