New Dharavandhoo Airport Terminal to Double Capacity, Boost Baa Atoll Economy

Politics ·
The government has launched a major upgrade for Dharavandhoo Airport, with a new terminal set to modernize services and expand capacity for the busy Baa Atoll hub. Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen inaugurated the terminal development project, stating it is a key part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's vision to strengthen the national transport network. The minister emphasized that the upgrade is crucial for unlocking the full economic potential of Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned for its tourism. "While the atoll is internationally recognised, residents can fully benefit from tourism only if adequate infrastructure and facilities are in place," Minister Ameen said during the ceremony. He described the current terminal as outdated and unable to handle growing demand. The new facility is designed to double the airport's passenger capacity and significantly enhance the travel experience through modern amenities. Dharavandhoo Airport serves as a vital gateway for both tourists visiting the atoll's resorts and local residents, managing a high volume of domestic flights. The broader government policy aims to make domestic air travel faster, easier, and more efficient across the Maldives. As part of this strategy, operational management of Dharavandhoo Airport is expected to be transferred to Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) following the upgrade.
