New Dhivehi Word Cards Launched to Boost Primary Student Language Learning

Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed has officially launched the 'Dhivehi Word Card' set, a new educational tool developed by the Alimas Institute to modernize the way young students engage with the national language. The launch took place during the 'Dhivehi Language Evening,' an event hosted by the Dhivehi Language Academy in Hulhumalé Phase 2. The ceremony was attended by Hassan Shaakir Mohamed, President of the Dhivehi Language Academy, alongside senior officials from the Alimas Institute. Designed specifically for students in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 of the national curriculum, the Word Cards aim to simplify the process of vocabulary acquisition. The Alimas Institute developed the set by adapting the proven concept of English language flashcards, tailoring the approach to fit the unique linguistic needs of Dhivehi learners. According to the institute, the primary goal is to transform vocabulary learning from a rote exercise into an engaging and enjoyable activity. By introducing a tactile and visual element to the classroom, the cards are expected to spark greater interest in the Dhivehi language among primary school children. This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to ensure that the national language remains vibrant and accessible to the younger generation. By integrating these tools into the primary education framework, educators hope to see a significant improvement in how students comprehend and utilize Dhivehi words and their meanings in daily communication.
