New Guest Information System to Streamline Tourist Data and Government Services

World ·
The Maldives has launched the Guest Information System, a digital initiative designed to centralize tourist data and enhance information sharing across government agencies. Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer inaugurated the system, stating it represents a critical step in the digitalization of government services and aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s "Maldives 2.0" vision. Developed by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the system aims to eliminate redundant data entry for the tourism sector. Green tax-registered businesses can now submit tourist information through a single platform, which will be shared automatically with both MIRA and the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. This integration removes the need for businesses to submit separate reports to different agencies. To maximize efficiency, the system can be integrated directly into the existing guest management software used by resorts, hotels, and guesthouses. This shift toward automatic reporting is a key component of MIRA’s Digital Transformation Roadmap, reducing manual paperwork and the risk of data errors. MIRA has established a phased onboarding timeline for taxpayers. Establishments with more than 50 beds are required to begin reporting through the system by November 1, 2026. All other green tax-registered entities must migrate to the system for reporting periods starting January 1, 2027. Despite the new system, MIRA clarified that green tax filing and payment deadlines remain unchanged. Businesses will continue to file returns and make payments via MIRAConnect; however, they will no longer need to upload separate information sheets once their data is processed through the Guest Information System. The platform allows for real-time updates on tourist accommodation from arrival to departure. As part of its long-term strategy, MIRA plans to integrate the system with Maldives Immigration’s "Imuga" portal to further streamline the arrival and departure process for visitors.
