New Heritage Tourism Strategy to Boost Economic Gains for Utheemu Residents

The Maldives is developing a comprehensive framework to ensure that the economic benefits of heritage tourism in Utheemu, Haa Alifu Atoll, directly reach the local community. The Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Heena Waleed, announced that the government is coordinating with various ministries and local institutions to broaden the financial opportunities generated by the historically significant island. Speaking on PSM News’ "Raajje Miadhu" programme, Minister Heena explained that while the Utheemu Palace remains the primary draw for domestic and international visitors, the government aims to diversify the island's attractions. The strategy involves promoting other historic sites, including the doorway of the palace of Boduthakurufaanu, the Kandhuvalu Mosque, and Vaahakavaavu, alongside several new development projects. By expanding the visitor experience beyond a single landmark, the ministry believes tourism momentum will increase, creating a ripple effect of economic growth. The goal is to move beyond passive visitation and establish a structured system where revenues are more equitably shared among the residents and the island council. “We believe that the development of tourism in this area will receive further momentum through these sites and the projects being developed, allowing the benefits to residents to expand in different ways,” Minister Heena stated. She emphasized that the government is working closely with the local council to ensure the community remains at the center of these developments. This initiative aligns with a broader policy directive from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to maximize the economic potential of the nation's cultural heritage. To support this, the ministry is designing a system to provide targeted support for traditional handicraft activities and home-based businesses, allowing families to monetize their skills as visitor numbers grow. The announcement comes as the government prepares to mark this year’s National Day at the national level in Utheemu, highlighting the island's enduring role in the Maldivian national identity.
