New Maaran’ga Market in Maafushi Boosts Visibility for Small Maldivian Businesses

Politics ·
A new entrepreneurial initiative titled “Maaran’ga Market” has launched in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, creating a dedicated platform for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to showcase and sell their products. Organized by the Business Center Corporation (BCC) in partnership with the Maafushi Council and Maafushi Local Authority Company Limited (MLAC), the market serves as a strategic bridge between local artisans and a wider consumer base. Operating daily from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM during its event windows, the market is scheduled to return once a month starting in April. The current setup features 12 specialized kiosks, with four reserved for Maafushi-based entrepreneurs and eight allocated to businesses traveling from the capital, Malé. The offerings range from traditional handicrafts and pastries to various locally produced food items. Samih Adam, Deputy Managing Director of BCC, emphasized that the project specifically targets start-ups and emerging entrepreneurs. He noted that Maafushi was selected due to its proximity to Malé, which allows city-based small businesses to expand their exposure without prohibitive logistical hurdles. This strategic location leverages Maafushi's status as a tourism hub to attract both local residents and international visitors. Supported by the Ministry of Economic Development, the initiative is part of a broader government effort to cultivate a supportive ecosystem for business growth. By reducing the barriers to market entry, the government aims to diversify the local economy and empower independent vendors. Participating business owners have welcomed the initiative, noting that such platforms provide critical visibility that is often difficult for small-scale operations to achieve independently. Vendors highlighted the market as a vital opportunity to test new products and expand their customer reach in a high-traffic environment. As Maafushi continues to grow as a center for tourism and local commerce, the BCC expects the Maaran’ga Market to become a sustainable model for regional business development, fostering a stronger network of Maldivian entrepreneurs.
