New Maaranga Market in Maafushi to Boost Local Entrepreneurs on May 10

Politics ·
The administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is expanding its support for small and medium-sized enterprises with the launch of the 'Maaranga' Market in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll. The initiative provides a dedicated commercial hub for local entrepreneurs to sell their goods in one of the Maldives' most prominent local tourism destinations. Developed through a collaboration between the Maafushi Council, the Local Authority Company Limited, and the Business Centre Corporation (BCC), the market aims to generate direct economic benefits for island residents by leveraging the high volume of tourists visiting the area. The project debuted in April with 12 kiosks featuring traditional Maldivian cuisine and artisanal handicrafts. Early participants have praised the initiative, noting that it offers a vital platform for small businesses to increase their visibility and reach a wider customer base. Following the initial success, a significantly expanded version of the market is scheduled to open on May 10. This date was strategically chosen to coincide with Children's Day, aiming to draw larger crowds and create a festive atmosphere for both locals and visitors. Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed, Managing Director of the BCC, emphasized that the goal is to capitalize on the significance of Children's Day to create fresh opportunities for local vendors. He noted that the administration is encouraging businesses to integrate their offerings with the day's commemorative activities. Organizers have indicated that they are prepared to increase the number of available kiosks if demand from local vendors exceeds current capacity for the May event. This flexibility underscores the government's commitment to ensuring as many residents as possible can benefit from the growing tourism economy in Maafushi.
