World ·
Thoriq Ibrahim, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has officially presented his credentials to the UAE government, marking the start of his diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi. Ambassador Thoriq presented his documents to the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omar Obaid Al Shamsi. During the meeting, Minister Al Shamsi welcomed the new envoy and expressed a commitment to deepening cooperation between the two nations across multiple sectors to benefit the citizens of both countries. In response, Ambassador Thoriq praised the UAE's regional and international progress under the leadership of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He reaffirmed his dedication to expanding the bilateral relationship, emphasizing a goal of broadening ties across various strategic fields. The Maldives and the UAE maintain a long-standing partnership characterized by close diplomatic relations. Current government cooperation focuses on critical global and local challenges, including environmental protection, climate action, renewable energy, and the shared interest of tourism development. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appointed Thoriq to this key diplomatic post last Thursday, following the approval of the Majlis (the Maldivian Parliament) on June 22. This appointment brings a wealth of sectoral experience to the embassy, as Thoriq previously served as the Minister of Tourism and Environment under the current administration. The ambassadorial position had remained vacant since April 6, following the removal of the previous envoy, Mohamed Hussain Shareef. The appointment of a new ambassador is expected to revitalize diplomatic efforts and streamline collaboration between Male' and Abu Dhabi.
