New Mental Health Hospital in Hulhumalé to Address Surging Patient Demand

World ·
The Maldives government has finalized plans to establish a specialized Mental Health Hospital in Hulhumalé, citing the high concentration of patients and medical resources in the capital region. Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali confirmed the decision while addressing inquiries from the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament. Data provided by the Minister reveals a significant demand for psychiatric care, with approximately 45,000 of the 70,000 mental health consultations conducted nationwide over the last three years occurring within the Male' region. Due to this trend, a 10,000-square-foot plot of land has been allocated in Hulhumalé to house the new facility. Minister Geela highlighted that previous administrations failed to prioritize mental healthcare, leaving the current health system without a dedicated hospital for psychiatric needs. She noted that this gap in infrastructure, combined with a persistent social stigma surrounding mental illness, has frequently discouraged citizens from seeking timely treatment. "Mental illness is a condition that breeds anxiety and fear among the public, and this is not unique to the Maldives," Minister Geela stated. "Consequently, people hesitate and delay seeking treatment. This is exactly why we are establishing a specialized system to treat these specific conditions." The new hospital is envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility equipped with modern resources to provide comprehensive care. While basic psychiatric services are currently available across various atolls, this centralized hub will leverage the specialized expertise and resources primarily concentrated in the capital. Beyond the new hospital, the government is expanding its support network. Last year, the national mental health helpline processed over 10,000 calls, significantly increasing accessibility to crisis support. Additionally, Minister Geela reported a success story from the Home for People with Special Needs in Guraidhoo, where 60 individuals have successfully completed their treatment and reintegrated into their communities.
