New Mosque and Quran Centre Construction Begins in Maamendhoo
Politics ·
Construction is now underway in Maamendhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, for a new mosque designed to accommodate 500 worshippers and a branch of the National Centre for the Holy Quran.
A special groundbreaking ceremony inaugurated by former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhsin marked the project's start. The event was attended by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Maamendhoo Council members, and many residents.
The mosque will feature modern amenities, including a solar power system and air conditioning, to ensure sustainability and comfort. It will also house a dedicated classroom and a library, which will function as the base for Quranic educational programs on the island.
This project is part of a wider initiative by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and the National Centre for the Holy Quran to establish teaching branches across the Maldives, with a focus on the atolls, to deepen engagement with the Holy Quran.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the government's commitment to this goal, announcing plans to open a Quran centre branch on every inhabited island.
The development reflects the government's ongoing efforts to promote Islamic values and support religious education for future generations.
