New Research Scholarship to Create First Academic Body of Maldivian Heritage Literature

The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage has launched the Signature Research Scholarship, a strategic initiative designed to cultivate a new generation of scholars and drastically increase academic publications on Maldivian heritage. The program aims to identify and document the distinctive characteristics of the nation's identity, filling a critical void in the country's academic landscape. By developing a specialized pool of qualified researchers, the government seeks to elevate the study of culture to the same level of priority as healthcare, education, and tourism. Speaking on PSM News' "Raajje Miadhu" program, Deputy Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Aishath Shimla emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of balancing material progress with cultural and spiritual development. Shimla noted that while the Maldives possesses a rich and unique history, the heritage sector has historically lagged behind other developmental areas. A primary driver for the scholarship is the current shortage of academically rigorous literature. Shimla revealed that there are currently no established benchmarks to define what constitutes "distinctly Maldivian" traits, largely because comprehensive research and detailed documentation have never been systematically carried out. To address this, the ministry has opened 50 scholarships. A mandatory requirement for participants is the production of a book or a scholarly publication upon completion of the program. This requirement is intended to build a foundational body of academic literature that will serve as a reference for future generations. Beyond the publications, the scholarship serves as a vital pathway for higher education in heritage studies, a field where opportunities have remained limited within the Maldives. By training local specialists, the ministry aims to establish clear, research-based criteria for the identification and preservation of Maldivian heritage, ensuring the nation's identity is documented with academic precision.
