New stock of 5 Rufiyaa notes to enter circulation tomorrow amid market shortage
Economy ·
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced that a new stock of five Rufiyaa notes will be issued for circulation starting tomorrow, after the notes currently in use became torn and damaged, making them very scarce in the market.
The MMA said it is always making special efforts to provide notes matching the cash demand arising in the Maldivian economy. It also noted that the five Rufiyaa note is one the authority distributes in large quantities to the public and businesses.
According to the MMA, the main reason the stock of this note became scarce was that it has become one of the most used notes in everyday shopping, and the amount of five Rufiyaa notes returned to the MMA through banks has fallen.
The date printed on the new notes scheduled to be issued to the market tomorrow is 31 July 2025, 6 Safar 1447. The notes have been signed by MMA Governor Ahmed Munawwar. The official Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol has also been included on this new note.
The MMA said this is the first time a new stock has been brought since the five Rufiyaa note was newly issued under the Ran Dihasfaheh note series in 2017.
The MMA informed that although distribution of these new notes into the economy will start from tomorrow, the five Rufiyaa notes currently in circulation will also continue to be used as before.
