New Thilafushi Container Depot Opens to Ease Male' Commercial Harbour Congestion
Politics ·
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has officially operationalized a new empty container depot at Thilafushi Industrial Island, marking a strategic move to alleviate chronic congestion at the Male' Commercial Harbour. The facility's maiden trial run was successfully completed by the MSS Galena, a vessel operated by Maldives State Shipping (MSS).
The initiative is a direct response to severe space constraints at the capital's primary port. To establish the depot, MPL completed significant infrastructure upgrades over the last two months, including the construction of a 60-meter key wall that now supports the specialized docking and storage area.
Under the new system, container vessels will no longer remain docked at the Male' Commercial Harbour for multiple days to load empty containers after discharging cargo. By shifting these logistical operations to Thilafushi, MPL expects to eliminate critical bottlenecks and significantly reduce vessel turnaround times, ensuring a smoother workflow for the nation's maritime trade.
The Thilafushi facility is designed as a comprehensive hub for storing, cleaning, and repairing empty shipping containers before they are returned to international shipping lines. With a total capacity of 3,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), the depot provides a substantial boost to the country's existing port infrastructure and logistics chain.
MPL officials clarified that this depot is an interim solution to address immediate capacity challenges. These operations will remain in place until the completion and opening of the new international commercial port at Thilafushi, which is currently projected for November 2027.
This development reflects MPL's broader strategy to enhance service quality and modernize port operations through systematic infrastructure improvements, ensuring the Maldives can keep pace with increasing trade demands while larger projects are finalized.
