New Training Program Empowers Technicians to Manage Hybrid Energy Systems in Atolls

World ·
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has launched a specialized training program for powerhouse staff in Raa and Baa atolls to enhance the operation and maintenance of newly installed renewable energy systems. The initiative focuses on providing Maldivian technicians with the practical skills necessary to manage hybrid energy setups, which integrate diesel generators, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and battery storage. By mastering these technologies, staff can ensure that the islands' power grids operate at full potential while reducing the frequency of technical failures. In addition to local powerhouse employees, the training includes technical teams from the head offices of the State Electric Company (STELCO) and FENAKA Corporation. This collaborative approach ensures that both regional operators and central management have the expertise required to troubleshoot day-to-day operational issues independently. According to the Ministry, the program is a strategic move to decrease the islands' heavy reliance on imported fuel. By increasing the efficiency of solar and battery integration, the government aims to lower fuel consumption and reduce the environmental footprint of electricity generation across the atolls. Beyond the technical benefits, the Ministry highlighted that the initiative will directly impact the quality of life for residents. The transition to more stable, hybrid systems is expected to provide communities with a more reliable and uninterrupted electricity service, marking a significant step toward sustainable development in the Maldives.
