New Vilunveshi Grant Programme to Boost Maldives Climate Resilience and Food Security
World ·
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has launched the Vilunveshi Grant Programme, a strategic initiative designed to fortify the Maldives against the escalating impacts of climate change while strengthening national food security.
Officially unveiled by Minister Ali Shareef during the "Adapting to Climate Change Seminar," the programme operates under the broader "Enhancing Climate Resilience and Food Security" project. It aims to foster sustainable, environmentally friendly practices that protect the archipelago's fragile ecosystem and ensure a stable food supply for its residents.
The initiative focuses on removing financial barriers that often hinder the implementation of innovative climate solutions. By providing targeted financial support, the programme seeks to empower individuals, community organizations, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as women and youth entrepreneurs who possess forward-thinking ideas for environmental protection.
A key pillar of the Vilunveshi Grant is the integration of technology. The ministry expects the programme to catalyze the adoption of new digital tools and create sustainable income opportunities that align with ecological preservation. To achieve this, the ministry is collaborating with SME Digital and the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources.
During the launch, Minister Ali Shareef emphasized that the private sector is essential to the nation's survival and growth. He noted that private enterprises play a critical role in enhancing the country's capacity to withstand climate shocks and driving sustainable development.
The grant follows a matching scheme model, prioritizing projects focused on water security, food production, and digitalization. By bridging the funding gap, the government aims to transform conceptual innovations into tangible community assets that can withstand the realities of a warming planet.
