New Waste Rules Target Producers and Polluters Within Two Months

Politics ·
The Maldives will implement three new waste management regulations within the next two months, aiming to strengthen enforcement and hold producers accountable. Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim announced that the rules, covering general waste management, waste management services, and disposable waste, are in the final drafting stages. Consultations with stakeholders and legal reviews are complete. A key component is the development of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rule. This will make manufacturers and importers responsible for the waste generated by their products even after consumers use them. The minister warned of stricter enforcement against illegal dumping, with fines and legal action on the table. He stressed the policy focuses on accountability, not just punishment, linking responsible waste handling to both public cleanliness and economic health. Minister Ibrahim emphasized that public responsibility is crucial, urging everyone to manage their own waste. The government continues to run public awareness campaigns on the issue.
