No Concerns Among Hirimaradhoo Residents as Government Pushes Forward with Relocation to Hanimaadhoo
Politics ·
Residents of Hirimaradhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll have expressed their support for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to relocate them to Hanimaadhoo. Speaking to Sun, former Hirimaradhoo Council President Mohamed Waheed revealed that housing construction is already underway, aiming for completion within one and a half years. Waheed noted that while residents had petitioned previous governments for relocation without success, the current administration is moving swiftly. Hanimaadhoo Council President Abdul Sattar Hassan emphasized the importance of ensuring housing and essential services are in place before the relocation to avoid difficulties. President Muizzu’s resolution also paves the way for Hirimaradhoo residents to vote in Hanimaadhoo during the upcoming local council elections, despite opposition from MDP interim chairman Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, who called the move “against the law.” Once the relocation is complete, Hirimaradhoo will be declared uninhabited.
