No One Is Above the Law Regardless of Profession, Government Spokesperson Affirms

The Maldivian government will not grant special treatment to individuals accused of illegal actions based on their professional status, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef announced during his weekly press briefing.
Speaking at 'Presser with the Spox,' Shareef emphasized that the law applies equally to all citizens across all sectors. While acknowledging that different professions carry specific rights, discretions, and responsibilities, he stressed that these do not exempt anyone from legal accountability. He reaffirmed that the administration, under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, remains resolute in its commitment to respect and uphold court orders.
Central to the spokesperson's remarks was the principle of the separation of powers. Shareef assured the public that the executive branch would not take any action that undermines the judiciary, erodes its authority, or curtails its legal powers, ensuring the independence of the court system remains intact.
Addressing the specifics of administrative roles, Shareef clarified the boundaries of the President's Office. He noted that while the office ensures press conferences held on its premises follow established guidelines, the actual enforcement of court orders is the sole responsibility of the relevant law enforcement agencies.
In response to recent legal developments, the spokesperson advised that any ambiguity regarding a recent injunction issued by the Criminal Court should be resolved through formal legal procedures rather than through informal channels. The briefing underscores a government stance of transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law during a period of heightened judicial scrutiny.
