No Temporary Shelter Available for Flood-Hit Residents in Ga. Kolamaafushi

Local News ·
The council of Ga. Kolamaafushi has stated that there is no temporary accommodation available for residents whose homes were damaged by severe flooding caused by heavy rains during the western monsoon. According to police, water entered 45 houses and a health center on the island, resulting in various levels of damage. Kolamaafushi Council President Mussaad Saeed said the council had provided assistance to 47 houses where water had completely entered to depths of one foot or two feet, causing significant damage to mattresses and furniture. He noted that the school hall and classrooms, which could have served as temporary shelters, were themselves underwater and unusable. The council dug trenches from roads to drain water out of the village, and the water level has since receded. The council reported that water had entered 85 percent of the houses in the village overnight. The National Meteorological Authority (Met) has urged safety measures, forecasting rain across most of the country until next Wednesday.
