Children's Ombudsperson Niumath Shafeeq has called for a collective commitment to protecting children's rights, asserting that securing these fundamental liberties is the only way to ensure a happy and stable future for the nation's youth.
Speaking on National Children's Day, the Ombudsperson emphasized that a child's happiness is deeply intertwined with the love and care they receive from their immediate environment. She urged families, friends, and policymakers to prioritize the well-being of young people in every decision that impacts their lives.
Shafeeq stressed the vital importance of nurturing strong, open relationships. She encouraged children to communicate their emotions freely and urged adults to foster environments where children feel safe and heard. According to the Ombudsperson, meaningful development often stems from simple, consistent interactions, such as sharing family mealtimes or spending unstructured time together at home.
"There are many things you will encounter in life, but it is very important to remember that friends will always be there for you," Shafeeq noted, highlighting the role of peer support in a child's growth. She advised adults to engage in activities that children genuinely enjoy, as these experiences strengthen emotional bonds and promote long-term mental health.
Beyond the home, the Ombudsperson identified schools as critical spaces for emotional expression and social development. She called for a culture of mutual respect between students and teachers to ensure that educational institutions remain safe, supportive sanctuaries for learning.
Concluding her address, Niumath Shafeeq advocated for a unified national policy approach that places the best interests of the child at the forefront of all governance. While commending those currently working in child protection, she appealed to all sectors of Maldivian society to collaborate more closely to ensure every child can thrive in a nurturing environment.
