Police have arrested one of the people involved in a major accident in Hulhumalé, in which a stolen motorcycle carrying three people was being driven against traffic. The suspect was taken into custody after being discharged from hospital following treatment.
According to police, two motorcycles collided at some time during the night of the 7th of this month on Nirulhu Road in Hulhumalé. The rider of the motorcycle that was carrying three people — Mohammed Saif, 27, of L. Māmendhoo, East — was arrested last Saturday. Police said he was arrested after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the accident and being released from hospital.
Following the arrest, Saif was brought before the Criminal Court for a decision on his detention, and the court ordered that he be remanded in custody for one week.
Police also said that Saif has a record of 13 cases of driving without a licence, along with cases of driving without the annual fee, roadworthiness or insurance, and a record of driving while using a communication device.
It has also emerged that the person riding the motorcycle that crashed at high speed while carrying three people against the flow of traffic was someone for whom the Criminal Court had issued a remand order.
The motorcycle carrying Saif and two others, which was being driven against traffic, struck a motorcycle that was travelling lawfully on the road at that time. Two members of the same family were on that motorcycle; one suffered bleeding in the brain, while the other sustained serious injuries to the face.
