Ooredoo Launches PayPal Services to Boost Maldivian SMEs and Global Trade

World ·
Ooredoo Maldives has officially launched PayPal services through its m-Faisaa platform, positioning the Maldives as one of the few countries in the Southeast Asian region to offer the global payment giant's services. The service, which went live on June 15, allows users to register and manage their accounts directly via the m-Faisaa platform. According to Hussain Niyaz, Ooredoo Maldives’ Chief Commercial Officer, the integration is designed for seamless accessibility, meaning users do not need to download or install a separate PayPal application to begin using the service. This development is expected to provide a significant boost to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and home-based businesses. By simply sharing their PayPal ID, local entrepreneurs can now receive payments from international customers in US dollars, removing traditional barriers to cross-border transactions. Officials believe the service will empower Maldivian businesses to integrate more effectively into the global digital economy and participate in international e-commerce. The launch follows a strategic rollout, with Techfin Maldives—Ooredoo’s fintech subsidiary—receiving the necessary inward remittance permit in October 2023. The system underwent a rigorous testing phase earlier this year to ensure stability before the public release. The government has expressed optimism that the availability of PayPal will expand the digital footprint of Maldivian entrepreneurs, allowing them to compete on a global scale and diversify their revenue streams through easier access to international markets.
