Opposition MP Mauroof Remanded for Five Days Following Fishermen's Protest Arrest

Politics ·
Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, a lawmaker from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has been remanded in custody for five days by the Criminal Court following his arrest during a fishermen's protest. The protest, organized by the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU), a trade union representing yellowfin tuna fishermen, began on Wednesday and escalated into clashes with police on Thursday. Three individuals, including Mauroof, were arrested on suspicion of failing to obey police orders and obstructing officers from performing their duties. Mauroof, who serves as the secretary-general of BKMU, was remanded amidst protests outside the Criminal Court, where MDP members rallied for his release. The fishermen voiced frustration over the government's failure to fulfill promises, including the purchase of yellowfin tuna, setting a floor price, and improving access to fuel and ice. Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam acknowledged their concerns and stated that the government is working to address their demands.
