Opposition MP Submits Resolution Demanding Full Disclosure of Rasmaale Agreement Details
Politics ·
A resolution has been submitted to the Maldives People's Majlis (Parliament) by opposition MDP MP Mickaiel Ahmed Naseem of the Galolhu South constituency, calling for the full disclosure of all details of the agreement signed between the government and UAE-based company Eagle Hills concerning the Rasmaale project.
During the parliamentary session on 21 October 2026, the MP argued that the government has been keeping the details of the agreement secret, despite the immense public interest in the project. He listed several specific concerns: the agreement’s terms have not been made public; over 500 hectares of reclaimed land has been leased to Eagle Hills for 99 years without any upfront payment or rent; the company has been granted the right to generate ‘rolling lease interest’ by subleasing the land to third parties; and despite the President having stated on Independence Day that Rasmaale would never be given to any foreign entity, the current agreement leases over 500 hectares to Eagle Hills.
MP Naseem warned that the secrecy surrounding the agreement could lead to corruption and substantial losses to state assets, noting that Parliament has a constitutional duty to oversee the executive and ensure accountability. The resolution seeks to compel the government to present all details of the agreement to the Parliament.
