Orange Alert Issued for Heavy Rain, Flooding from Kaafu to Vaavu Atoll

Environment ·
The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an orange weather alert for the region stretching from Kaafu Atoll to Vaavu Atoll, effective until 22:30 tonight. The alert warns of heavy rainfall and possible flooding during this period. The Meteorological Service stated that the orange alert is issued when rainfall of 90 millimeters per hour or 120 millimeters over six hours is expected. The bad weather is attributed to the strengthening of the west monsoon and cloud clusters forming in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which are pushing rain clouds towards the atolls. The service forecasts continued heavy rain across various parts of the Maldives for the next 24 hours. In response to the ongoing heavy rain, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Service is working to drain water from flooded streets in Male'. The MNDF has urged seafarers to exercise caution, check safety equipment such as life jackets and communication systems, and avoid overloading cargo vessels. They also advised travelers to inform relevant authorities before embarking on any journeys. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also advised the public to take precautions to protect against potential damage. Recommendations include moving valuable items and food to higher ground to avoid water damage, securing loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds, and covering unused electrical equipment. Authorities urge everyone to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines during this period.
