Over 100 Children Placed in Foster Families Under 'One Family for Every Child' Initiative

Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham, has announced that 110 children in state care have been placed with foster families since November 2023 under the government’s 'One Family for Every Child' initiative. The Minister shared this progress during a press conference at the President’s Office, highlighting the programme's role in providing stable and nurturing homes for vulnerable children. The initiative aims to address developmental gaps in children separated from their biological families and is a key priority of the administration. Minister Shiham emphasised the government’s commitment to safeguarding these children while fostering their social and practical skills. She urged more Maldivians to join the initiative and collaborate with the Ministry to provide love and care for these children. Additionally, the government is expanding safe environments for children, including a newly established facility in Faafu Atoll. The Ministry has also introduced internship programmes to prepare older children in shelters for independent futures, with 23 children securing internships and 40 receiving vocational training this year. Some have already graduated from the National Service Programme, marking a significant milestone.
