Over 100,000 German Tourists Visit Maldives as Government Targets Growth

World ·
More than 100,000 tourists from Germany have visited the Maldives so far this year, cementing Germany's position as the fourth largest source market for the archipelago. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, exactly 101,366 German travelers have arrived in the country during the current period. While these figures show steady interest, they represent a decrease from the previous year, when the Maldives welcomed 167,822 German visitors. To bridge this gap and stimulate growth, the Maldivian government is actively pursuing strategic partnerships within the European market. Central to this effort is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) and DERTOUR Deutschland GmbH. The agreement was formalized by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his official visit to Germany, where he also participated in the Maldives-German Business Roundtable. The partnership sets ambitious targets: maintaining a baseline of 100,000 tourists this year and scaling that figure to 200,000 visitors in the coming year. In the broader context of national tourism, China remains the primary source of visitors with 308,913 arrivals, followed by Russia with 232,676 and England with 121,239. Overall, the Maldives has seen a total of 1.6 million tourist arrivals so far this year. This influx highlights a diverse preference in accommodation; while one million visitors opted for the luxury of private resorts, 349,861 tourists chose the more community-integrated experience of guesthouses on inhabited islands.
