Over 3,200 Maldivians Join New PayPal Service to Boost Digital Economy
World ·
More than 3,200 users have connected to the newly launched PayPal service in the Maldives, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced during a press conference on Monday. The platform, which debuted on June 15, fulfills a key presidential pledge to modernize the nation's financial infrastructure through e-wallets and accessible international payment systems.
According to the President, 3,280 individuals have linked their accounts, with 2,159 users having already successfully activated their digital wallets. He characterized the integration as a significant milestone, noting that while previous administrations had attempted to secure the service, the current government achieved the goal through dedicated efforts since taking office.
The service operates through a strategic integration between PayPal and Ooredoo Maldives via the m-Faisaa platform. By implementing this system, the Maldives officially joins the ranks of the region's most advanced digital economies, providing a streamlined bridge for both domestic and international financial transactions.
President Muizzu emphasized that the arrival of the global payment giant is a catalyst for local economic growth. He specifically highlighted the benefit to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which can now leverage the world's most ubiquitous payment platform to reach a wider global market.
Looking forward, the administration intends to expand the service's domestic reach and introduce additional financial capabilities. The President affirmed that the government remains committed to working closely with both PayPal and Ooredoo Maldives to secure further operational advancements and enhance the digital tools available to Maldivian citizens and business owners.
