Over 58,000 Applications Reveal Acute Housing Crisis in Greater Male' Region

World ·
The Maldives government has recorded an unprecedented 58,505 applications for its flagship 'Housing for All' scheme, highlighting a severe residential shortage in the capital region. The surge in demand was so significant that the government extended the application deadline on June 15 to accommodate thousands of citizens struggling with technical portal failures. Data from the application period reveals a clear preference for multi-unit dwellings. Of the total submissions, 35,930 applicants sought flats, while 22,575 applied for land allocation. The Family Housing Programme was the primary driver of this demand, attracting 45,644 applicants, whereas the Housing for All programme saw 12,861 applications, with a heavy lean toward land requests. In response to this overwhelming pressure, the government has committed to a massive allocation plan. This includes 15,000 land plots across the Greater Male' area and Rasmale', as well as 7,900 flats. The flat allocation is strategically divided: 4,000 for Male' residents, 1,500 for atoll inhabitants living in the capital, and 2,400 reserved for special priority categories. Land plots will be distributed among 10,000 Male' residents, 3,000 non-residents, and 500 persons with disabilities, with 1,500 plots specifically earmarked for those relocating from the city's congested narrow streets. To ensure broader accessibility, the government relaxed several eligibility rules. Spouses who already own residence can now apply for land, joint landholders may opt out, and parents can apply on behalf of disabled children. Additionally, families currently in small units may now upgrade to three-bedroom flats based on their family size. Infrastructure development is already accelerating to meet these targets. Phase 3 dredging of Hulhumale' is complete, preparing over 500 hectares for handover. Further reclamation projects are slated for Giraavaru Falhu and Uthuru Thilafalhu, while new flat constructions have commenced in Hulhumale' and Villimale'. With funding secured, the administration aims to complete these initiatives within its current term, promising critical relief to thousands of families seeking affordable and sustainable housing in the Maldives' most populous region.
