Over 700 Applicants Vie for Spots in Expanded Maldives Expo 2024

Interest in the Maldives Expo has surged, with over 700 applications submitted for this year's event. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced that the application window closed on August 31, revealing a significant spike in interest compared to the previous year. The current number of applicants is more than double the 270 entries received for the last edition. This growth underscores the event's role as the nation's largest exhibition designed to consolidate Maldivian producers and skilled professionals under one roof, providing a critical platform for marketing local products and services. Scheduled to run from October 23 to 31, the upcoming expo introduces a key policy shift to foster youth entrepreneurship. In a move to encourage early business engagement, the eligible age for participation has been lowered, allowing anyone aged 13 and above to exhibit their work. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their offerings across 16 different sectors, spanning 73 distinct categories. Beyond simple displays, the expo will be organized into various districts where businesses can actively sell their products, creating a direct pipeline for income generation. Minister Saeed emphasized that the expo serves as a vital springboard for emerging businesses and individuals entering the commercial sector. By providing a high-visibility venue to showcase skills, the government aims to empower local producers and scale their operations. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategic objective to enhance the capacity of Maldivian-led businesses and increase the domestic income of local producers. Preparations are currently underway to finalize the logistics for the event, which will take place during the final week of October.
