Over 77,000 Students Return to Class as Second School Term Begins

Thousands of students across the Maldives returned to their classrooms today, marking the official start of the second school term. The reopening follows a 16-day mid-term break that began on July 16, providing students and educators a brief respite after the completion of the first term. The second term is scheduled to run until December 17. Once completed, students will enter their year-end holiday starting December 18, a 30-day break that lasts until January 16. The new academic year is slated to commence on January 17. Education statistics for the current academic year highlight the scale of the national school system, with more than 77,000 students enrolled across 218 government schools. This year has also seen a significant intake of new learners, with 4,790 students allocated places in Grade 1. The distribution of these new Grade 1 students reflects the demographic spread between the capital and the islands. According to official data, 1,748 students were enrolled in schools within the Greater Malé area, while the majority—3,042 students—were allocated places in schools across the various atolls. As students settle back into their routines, the focus shifts toward the final stretch of the academic calendar, balancing classroom instruction with the upcoming year-end assessments and the transition to the next grade level.
