Over 80 buildings flooded in Malé as heavy rain hits; NDMA deploys pumps and sandbags
Local News ·
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that more than 80 buildings in Malé have been flooded following heavy rainfall. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the NDMA said that the flooded structures include 33 homes, 35 shops, six cafes and restaurants, five government and private buildings, four schools, two clinics, two warehouses, one office building and one construction site. One case of sewage leakage was also reported.
The NDMA has deployed pumps in 10 areas across Malé to drain water, and has handed over 10,000 sandbags to the Malé City Council to help prevent further flooding. The authority stated that by 11 p.m., assistance had been provided to 31 locations that requested sandbags, and efforts to assist the remaining sites are ongoing in coordination with other agencies.
Multiple organisations are involved in the response, including the MNDF Fire and Rescue Service, the Maldives Police Service, Dhivehi Red Crescent, Malé City Council, MTCC and HDC.
